What is a Compost Program?
This is a system that allows people within in a building or community to collect their organic waste for industrial composting. A good program will be a seamless addition to an already familiar waste disposal process. It will include simple instructions for people to follow and tools to make collection clean and easy.
Compost Programs for Any Situation
How to Create a Successful Compost Program
Decades of experience and experimentation have taught us how to solve the biggest problems with compost collection:
How do I arrange collection?
Check with your current waste hauler to see if they are able to pick up organic waste. If they offer that service, add it to your schedule. If they don’t, find a hauler in your area that does and arrange service with them.
Will this make my waste room smelly and gross?
Separating organic waste properly will actually keep your waste room cleaner. You will need to have green bins available for the waste hauler to pick up. With an effective program, you can expect your your new green bins to reduce the amount of waste in your trash bins by between 25-40%. You should take this into account when ordering green bins for shared waste rooms. You should also strongly consider purchasing compostable bags to line your organics carts. This will keep the carts cleaner, greatly reduce waste room smells and mess, and will extend the useful life of your bins. EcoSafe offers compostable bags/liners to fit every commonly used bin and cart on the market. Use our bag size calculator to see get the right bag for your specific bin.
What a compost program look like for me?
Make collection simple. If you want people to use the new organics program, and not mix up the streams, it needs to be as simple as possible. To do this, fit your organics collection process into what people are already doing for waste and recycling. In a multi-residential building, this might mean providing bins and bags to the residents. In an office, this could mean clear signage at each floor’s waste station. In a food service business, this could mean providing compostable gloves as well as a 5 gallon bucket with a liner at every food prep station.
Will people participate in a compost program?
Forming new habits and educating people goes beyond just signage. EcoSafe has developed multiple resources to inform people on what is changing, why it’s changing, and how they can fit the changes into their normal routines. We are happy to share these resources and provide infromation on how to share them. If you are interested, contact us today.
How much upkeep will this take going forward?
Once the effort has been put in to make a program successful, you will want to protect it from deteriorating over time. Put processes in place to make sure the program is being communicated and monitored going forward. Also, create a system to reorder materials and quickly measure the effectiveness of your program. This will keep your program on track and will allow you to share the fantastic results you’re generating. We have tools and process to help you with this.
DIY Compost Program vs. EcoSafe
If you want to create your own compost program, it is certainly possible – we’ve outlined the steps above. The difficult part isn’t making organics collection possible, it’s encouraging participation and reducing contamination.
With EcoSafe, you know thatĀ all of the products you’ll be using are designed purposefully, and certified completely by both BPI and CMA. On top of that, we can also provide you with the best compost program resources on the market.Ā We have guides, signs, and educational resources that we are happy to share with our customers.
Say Goodbye to Compost Smell
A bin full of food scraps won’t smell bad unless they are already decomposing. The reason compost bins get a bad rap is because food scraps smear on the bin, and will stay there even after being emptied. Those smears decompose over weeks and produce the foul smell we’ve all experienced.
To avoid this messy, smelly problem, we recommend using a bag to line each of your green bins. When food waste never touches the bin, everything stays clean and odor free. EcoSafe offers bags to fit every common bin on the market – find the size you need.
