UT Dallas Brings Composting to Campus with EcoSafe

Since 2019, UT Dallas has made composting accessible to its campus community through Comet Composting, a program that equips students, staff, and faculty with the tools to compost from their dorm rooms, offices, and break rooms.

The Approach

Participants complete a brief online composting training, then pick up a compost caddy, bin, and EcoSafe compostable bin liners from the Sustainability office. The same setup is available to departments through UT Dallas's Green Office program, extending composting access beyond residential students to staff across campus.

EcoSafe MultiRes

Why It Works

The countertop-friendly caddies have made composting approachable for everyday use, and the EcoSafe liners have been especially popular helping to keep bins clean while being fully compostable themselves, so nothing has to be transferred or rinsed out before disposal. The impact is visible right in the Sustainability office's own break room, where the countertop bin fills up completely every week from staff enjoying lunches and snacks - a small but telling sign of how easily composting fits into daily routines when the right tools are in place.

The Result

UT Dallas continues to distribute EcoSafe caddies and liners to students, staff, and faculty as a core part of its sustainability efforts, making composting a simple, low-barrier habit across campus.
